Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
